Captain Shreve High School Student Body President, Brexton Lopez, has been named a Student of the Year Regional Honoree by the Louisiana Department of Education, earning statewide recognition for his academic excellence, leadership, and service. Honorees selected advance to the next stage of the statewide Student of the Year competition.

This honor places Lopez among Louisiana’s top high school students. It recognizes his impact both in and beyond the classroom, as well as his representation of Captain Shreve and Caddo Parish Public Schools.“It really meant that all of the hard work finally paid off,” Lopez said. “It was good to reach a milestone and see the progress I’ve made. To me, it’s just another step toward success.”

Lopez reflected on the very path that led to his recognition on a statewide level. “I think about the people I’ve been surrounded by, the risks I’ve taken, and the extra steps I’ve gone through to set myself up for success– not just right now, but for the future.”

Captain Shreve’s principal, Bryant Sepulvado, said, “Brex  is hard-working, kind, caring, charismatic, and genuinely wants the people around him to succeed.” As Student Body President, he has worked closely with students, staff, and administrators, gaining leadership experience that helped prepare him for recognition at the regional level.

Mr. Sepulvado alluded to that very fact and highlighted how Brex’s achievement reflects the broader mission of Captain Shreve: “At Captain Shreve, the teachers, staff, and administration pride ourselves on developing student-led opportunities and leadership development,” he said. “Brex is an outstanding representative of what our students can achieve.

Looking ahead, Brex plans to attend the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he will study finance and remain active in campus leadership and student organizations. As he prepares for the next chapter of his academic career, Brex hopes his story encourages others to take chances and push themselves beyond their comfort zones.

“My freshman and sophomore year self is not the person you see now,” Lopez said. “I took risks, pushed myself in every way, and over time, the hard work paid off.”
