This year’s Homecoming Court is filled with outstanding, beautiful, and hard working students, but Semora Kennon is the one who shines the most. She is the 2023 Homecoming Queen. Many don’t know the exceptional things Kennon has done during her time as a Gator so here’s a run down.
Kennon is very involved with school and her studies. At 17 she’s already enrolled into two colleges, Shreve’s LSUS Dual Enrollment program and Southern University of Shreveport for an Associate Degree in Engineering. She is a part of many school organizations such as Youth and Government, 4-H, STUCO, Debate, BSA, KGTR, and National English Honor Society (NEHS). Kennon also has a certification in Adobe Digital Media. After High School she plans on going to college at Texas A&M, University of Texas at Austin, or Rice University to major in law.
The Announcement
The day that Kennon was selected as queen, she was also elected as Senior Class Secretary.
“I was leaving the office when they were calling the sophomore and junior maids and while in the hallway it was me and another girl walking together,” Semora said. “As I was walking I heard they got to the senior maids. I thought I didn’t win but I decided to stop by a class to hear them announce the queen and hear them announce my name. Me and the girl started to celebrate, till this day I still don’t know who she was.”
The Role
The responsibility of being queen does not only come with the title. She must also have organization and leadership.
“Even though it’s an exciting position, the pressure of being on homecoming court is definitely undefeated,” Kennon said. Every year the queen hosts a luncheon for her court and provides them with gifts. “There are a lot of important days in this honor. Having to provide for the ladies and keep everything on track for the luncheon is a part of my role,” Kennon adds. “ Everyone expects a lot out of the queen, so I have to keep my reputation pure.”
The Tension
Kennon is a person who doesn’t like big crowds or attention which is the opposite of what being Homecoming Queen is all about. As Kennon overcomes her anxiety about all the notoriety she will be getting at the Homecoming events such as the pep rally and the crowing at the football game, she is very grateful for this opportunity.
“I’m sure that at the events it will be a good experience for me even though it’s unnerving.”
