One of the many restrooms that are completely unusable.

The girl’s restrooms at Captain Shreve are in constant use. Not only is the bathroom used all day but it is necessary since most students are at school for at least eight hours. Lots of students go to the restroom for other reasons but the main reason is to actually use the restroom.

This necessity is being treated like a privilege because it has been abused by students who skip classes, waste time, vape, apply make-up, or fight. Social media trends are even encouraging students to vandalize sinks and paper towel holders and even post about it.

Popular opinion among most students is that the bathrooms in the school are gross and disgusting because of the stains and spills on the floor. Why would you want to spend even more time there if you didn’t have to?

Teachers have found a way to combat bathroom misuse by keeping the doors locked. The bathrooms all over campus are always needed but most of them are never unlocked because of such problems with abuse. If you are lucky enough to find a restroom that is unlocked there is a good chance there won’t be enough paper towels, no soap, no toilet paper, and recently, no toilet seats. These items aren’t just luxuries, they are necessities!

The administrators want to make sure that students use the restrooms properly, but if there are no paper towels or soap, or even a toilet seat, then it is unusable. The administration also wants to present a clean bathroom for new and touring students.

However, with the ongoing conditions, it seems they only care about what the new students will see for a short period of time and not what all students have to deal with every day.

The main problem with our bathroom system is that students don’t have what they need to get the job done.
