Junior Princess A’yana Taylor  before going to the Mardi Gras Ball.

This year Captain Shreve hosted the first annual Mardi Gras Ball on January 27 sponsored by Student Council. The court for the junior class princesses were students A’yana Taylor, Tamiyah Jarvis, and Hannah Persley. Taylor came out on top and was crowned the Mardi Gras Ball Princess. She will be attending the Mardi Gras parade riding on a float.

The Mardi Gras Ball was announced in early January after the return from Christmas Break. The dance was held on a Saturday night from eight to eleven o’clock in the Shreve cafeteria. It was originally supposed to be held in the gymnasium, but with the lower turnout the cafeteria was a much better choice for the amount of people who attended.

“Being as it’s the first annual dance, there was not as large of a turnout but everyone still had an enjoyable time,” Taylor said.

Taylor described her feeling of winning the princess title as “happy to be a part of the start of something new at my school.”

Even with all the glitz and glamour, there were still challenges. Due to the week out for snow and ice, many students felt there was not enough advertising or time given for students to get ready for the event.

Despite the minor “negatives” of the event, it still ended on a good note with a wide selection of music for students to dance to.

“I would definitely attend this event next year,” Taylor said.

Maybe the Mardi Gras Ball will grow more popular as it gains recognition and will become a strong tradition for a winter dance.
