Will Shreve Celebrate Byrd Week in 2023?
By Kelcee Leshay

There were rumors that this year Captain Shreve wouldn’t be celebrating Byrd Week. It may seem as though its just a celebration for high school students but it is more than that. Byrd and Shreve have a history that goes way back. Byrd was founded in 1925 and Captain Shreve opened in 1967.
There is always lots of competition between the two schools, including of the biggest high school football games in Shreveport as 1000+ people from each school and from across the area come to watch the big game. Captain Shreve students buy shirts that “diss” the Yellow Jacket while Byrd gets an inflatable Gator to burst or hang from a bridge. You may see notes throughout Youree Drive concerning the game just to get everyone riled up. So t is Byrd Week still on?
“Our goals as a program are bigger than one week.” – Adam Kirby, head football coach
Adam’s Kirby, Captain Shreve’s head football coach, thinks that without Byrd Week the team’s chances of winning increases. Kirby states, “I think it’s ridiculous to put so much hype on one game, rivalry or not.”
Kirby thinks every game the boys play is just important and he want’s them to stay focused on how they can win each snap, each drive, each game. He adds that “every game they should be encouraged, not just when they play Byrd.”

“These kid’s have been working hard this summer, and I think it would be good for the student’s body to support them, encourage them, and be excited about every game not just the Byrd game,” Kirby continued.
“Our goal as a program are bigger than one week,” Kirby concluded.
So there we have it. Captain Shreve will not have an official Byrd Week celebration. While the team focuses on their play in order to win every game, Gator fans will just have to do their talking outside of school as well.
