The official start to the 23-24 football season was the yearly jamboree, where Captain Shreve won against C.E. Byrd this year. It was an excellent way to kick off the season. As the biggest rivalry in the city, hundreds of Shreve and Byrd fans met at Independence Stadium as the teams looked to settle the pre-season dispute.
Shreve’s football team has many reasons to anticipate an excellent season and to top any and all opponents.
“I want us to play hard to where the fans, the faculty, and everyone else associated, is just proud of us and how we’ve played,” said Coach Kirby.
Shreve players have worked hard for their entire summer on and off the field to prepare for this school year’s football season.
“We’ve pretty much practiced all summer in the morning, Everybody is out there ready. After practice everyone is in the weight room going 100 percent. Everybody is maxing out, or whatever Coach Rivera tells us to do. I think everybody is pretty much ready for season to begin.” said by junior quarterback Brodie Savage.
The team’s hard work paid off. Captain Shreve scored the first touchdown on a long reception by senior Jordan Wiggins. Then after a back-and-forth game, the Gators scored the winning points with 47-yard field goal by senior John Hoyet Chance.
“As a team, We feel very excited, we feel like this year could really be something very special,” said junior football player Lionel Scott. The win against Byrd was an excellent way to begin this year’s football season. The Gators are looking forward many more great nights to come this football season.
